I recently discovered the work of artist David Turley after stumbling upon his studio at Artsource in Fremantle. Around his space, he has an array of carousel projectors in an array of different shapes and sizes, and boxes filled with a slide collection that is a mixture of washed out family photos and works of photo hobbyists that he’s picked up from estate auctions and yard sales.
David uses his found images to construct a variety of consumer objects like lamps, tables, or by arranging them in picture frames to construct a larger image. He recognises the value of the old Kodachrome slides. When one holds them up to light one observes the sharpness of the film grain and the rich, pure colours that cannot be replicated by any digital camera.
In their own way, I imagine Kodachrome fans (like me) are somewhat of a cult (Facebook even has a group called Kodachrome addicts). But when I encountered David, I felt like he’d really taken this look and love of old slides and transformed them into treasured objects of art.
