The Heights launches on ABC February 22 at 8.30pm. Double episodes will air on Fridays, or one can binge on the first 16 episodes on ABC Iview. Following the conclusion of episode 16 on April 12, there will be a mid season break, with the series returning to ABC and Iview in July.

WEST WEEKEND ran a feature on February 16 on Marcus Graham, the star of The Heights  called  the MAKING OF MARCUS by Amanda Keenan to celebrate the launch in which he recalled his audition for WAAPA in Perth in 1983 at which Marcus delivered a soliloquy and the recruiters were smitten. Marcus, who had been living on the streets of Perth rethought his life: “So then I thought: I might be good at something because I felt that I wasn’t much good at anything, and I had no family, no nothing. For the first time in my life I thought: ‘I can actually do something.’”

Marcus graduated in 1986  and moved to Sydney to chase opportunity. His first gig was in a  production of the Neil Simon play Biloxi Blues at the Opera House.

“I had a few jobs in theatre and someone said to me: ‘Your rocket hasn’t rally gone off yet, has it.’ So it put this idea in my head: ‘Oh, I think my rocket really needs to go off.”

He was recommended for a guest role in the Channel Ten show  E Street as the character Wheels and because the rocket took off his character was written into the show and the wheels kept turning.

Coming back to Perth to front as Pav , the  divorced former cop who lives in a brown brick housing tower which is the principal setting for The Heights, he settled in and delivered. Photographing him on set (I was stills photographer on The Heights) one senses his vulnerability and his defensiveness at time. He is warm and relaxed and happy on set but disappears quickly  when the small talk begins.
